The Inthrive Film Festival amplifies the stories, voices, and talents of incarceration survivors so that our voices change the narrative about what it means to survive incarceration and people are moved to remove barriers to successful reentry in their communities.

Through film festivals and other events that center on the voices and talents of incarceration survivors that attract people from all walks of life we create spaces where authentic voices and stories are heard and celebrated.
David had experienced the struggles of life after incarceration including barriers to housing and employment. He also had developed relationships with policy makers who believed in second chances. The seminal moment was when a politician told him, "I believe in giving people a second chance but my constituents don't. I need you to change their mind."
David realized if media has created a false narrative then we can use media to correct that narrative.
David saw a film festival could be a platform for incarceration survivors to share their story on their terms. He reached out to filmmakers, film festival directors & programmers, and artists. They helped him understand the issues of storytelling & incarceration and the nuts and bolts of film festival management.
The first Inthrive Film Festival was held in Richmond, VA, on Oct 14, 2023. Incarceration surviving filmmakers and advocates from around the country came together to celebrate what's possible after incarceration. More than just a gathering, it was a place where artists sold their first work, advocates networked, and new projects were launched. It was a powerful event and everyone knew there was potential for something more!
Two more events were held during that first season, one in urban metro DC and one in rural Southside Virginia, and both connected with the community, created space for local incarceration survivors, and were transforming hearts and minds through film created by or featuring the authentic voices of incarceration survivors.
The 2024-25 Season saw expanded partnerships with Virginia CARES, The Humanization Project, and the Virginia Film Festival as well as our first festivals outside of Virginia. The 2025-26 season saw more entries than the previous two seasons combined and a four day kick-off celebration followed by more events around Virginia and the nation.
What started as an idea to change the narrative is growing into a national movement to celebate what's possible after incarceration!
